sports mouthguard 1Mouth guards are designed to protect the teeth from injury during sports. It is estimated by the American Dental Association that mouth guards protect approximately 200,000 injuries each year in high school and collegiate football alone.

A properly fitted mouth guard must be protective, comfortable and tear resistant. If your mouth guard is too bulky it can cause interference in your speech and breathing, not to mention, affect your focus and athletic performance.

Unfortunately, the word “mouth guard” is universal. It includes a large variety of products, from “over the counter” guards to professionally manufactured custom mouth guards made by your dentist. Initially, the consumer can be easily fooled by the quality of a store bought guard! Because the most important criteria of a sports guard is retention and fit, the custom mouth guard made by your dentist is incomparable to the store bought sports guards.

As Health Professionals, we do not recommend store bought guards to our patients because we feel they deserve the best quality of care in injury prevention.
